U.S. Virgin Islands pet travel requirements
St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix are U.S. territory, so travel from the mainland is domestic — but the territory requires advance authorization for incoming dogs and cats in addition to the usual health certificate. Requesting that authorization late is the most common reason a Virgin Islands move slips.
What U.S. Virgin Islands specifically expects
Advance authorization
The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture requires notification or an import permit for dogs and cats entering the territory. Apply well before travel and carry the approval with your other documents.
Health certificate
A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from an accredited veterinarian is required, and airlines serving the territory generally want it dated within 10 days of departure.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination documentation is required for dogs and cats. Puppies and kittens under the vaccination age may need a written statement from the veterinarian explaining why the vaccine has not been given.
Onward inter-island travel
If you continue to a neighboring non-U.S. island — the BVI, for example — that is an international movement with a separate set of requirements. Plan the whole itinerary before scheduling the exam.
