Puerto Rico pet travel requirements
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so flying there from the mainland is a domestic trip — but pets are still inspected on arrival and airlines treat the route as an island destination with its own documentation checklist. There is no rabies quarantine for pets arriving from the mainland United States.
What Puerto Rico specifically expects
Health certificate
Bring a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from a licensed, accredited veterinarian. Airlines serving San Juan commonly require the certificate to be dated within 10 days of departure, which is tighter than the 30-day window many states allow.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination documentation is expected for dogs and cats old enough to be vaccinated. Carry the original certificate rather than a summary line on the exam paperwork.
Arrival inspection
The Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture oversees animal entry and may inspect animals and documents on arrival. Because it is a domestic flight, there is no CBP pet clearance step, but incomplete paperwork can still hold up release.
Heat embargoes
Caribbean routes are frequently affected by summer temperature embargoes for pets traveling as cargo. Confirm the embargo status for your dates before booking the veterinary exam.
